Kurdistan gained independence after the First World War, as said one diplomat: by luck: if oil deposits were discovered in Kirkuk a few weeks before, not after the declaration of independence and recognition by the Entente Powers, the Republic of Kurdistan would probably not formed. To mid of century the state was dependent on the UK, controlling neighboring Iraq, but had already developed a doctrine similar to the Swiss. After the withdrawal of Britain from the Middle East and the Socialists came to power in the seventies, the neutrality of Kurdistan was more times marked, because country was surrounded by a strong, hostile to him the states: Turkey, Iran, Iraq.
Migs-23 were purchased from the Soviet Union as the successor to the Hawker Hunters, because of restrictions on access to weapons from Western Europe and the USA, and the failure of talks with the Swedes to purchase Viggens.
